Scheme: Inspiration for this house design grew from the clients extensive travels throughout Thailand and Southeast Asia and the desire to express her love of Thai architecture in a modern format. An important aspect of the traditional Thai home is the incorporation of the surrounding landscape and the celebration of this from within the structure. Therefore, living spaces (public and private) embrace the outdoor spaces. In a culture where special attention is paid to building details, we embraced this through a series of carefully thought out exterior details. Even with the local height restrictions, the use of Dutch gables hinted at the flavor of the Thai country home, and flat clay tiles added texture to the roof forms. A clear cedar board and batten siding with a carved teak band encircled the entire bottom floor. The entry included cedar paneling with a front door with opposing Nagas (Dragons) to protect against any unwanted spirits.
